8 ways to burglar proof your house

You’ve worked hard to pay for your family home, so if you want to avoid thieves stealing your belongings follow our tips below.

1. Keep yourself protected online

Don’t write on Facebook that you’ve just bought a fabulous new TV or laptop; and definitely don’t post things such as “Going overseas tomorrow, can’t wait!”

2. Remove temptation

It takes seconds to be robbed, so don’t leave laptops, phones or keys near an open window. Even if you’re popping out for a moment it’s best not to leave a back door open as you just don’t know if thieves are waiting for an opportune moment to come in.

3. Make sure you have insurance

As the saying goes, hope for the best but prepare for the worst. Sometimes despite all the best precautions, burglars still manage to steal from your home. In these instances, your best assurance is to have an insurance policy that covers you against incidences of theft. Over60 have insurance products that you can tailor to suit various people's needs and budget – the peace of mind in knowing that all you hold near and dear is protected is priceless. 3. Security lighting

Having sensor lights is a big deterrent to would-be thieves trying to break in at nighttime. Cheap to buy and install, they can alert you if anyone is approaching your home or is in the backyard.

4. Lock away the tools

A thief can use anything to smash a window or door to get in, so don’t make it easy for them by leaving your shed unlocked or a spade out in the garden.

5. Keep the house looking lived-in

If you are going away, be sure to put a hold on your mail and ask a neighbour to collect any junk mail that will build up. You could also ask them to put out your bins on collection day and mow your front lawn if you’ll be away for a while so that it doesn’t look like you’re not around.

6. Pack away the ladder

Leaving a ladder out is like an open invitation to a burglar to enter your home from the nearest window. Keep them locked away in the shed or under the house.

7. Make it harder to open doors and windows

When you are going out or away, insert some wooden rods on any sliding doors or windows. This will make them much harder to open from the outside, even if the glass is smashed.

8. Draw attention to your security system

If you have an alarm, make sure the robbers know about it by placing a sticker in the window and keeping cameras visible. You can even do this with dummy cameras. Another security system that burglars tend to avoid – noisy dogs.

With Over60 you can tailor your home insurance to suit various needs and budgets so you can enjoy the peace of mind in knowing that the things you hold near and dear are protected. Find out how you can get up to 30 per cent off^ Over60 home insurance products now.
