The cast of A Place To Call Home prepare to say farewell
As the sixth and final season of A Place To Call Home airs, the actors have opened up about their fondest memories on the show.
In an interview with TV Week Close Up, the stars looked back at their time on the show and the impact it’s had on Aussie viewers.
The series creator, Bevan Lee, set the drama in the 1950s, showcasing all the various attitudes attached to the time.
"It set out to show us what has been, but also what still is," said Craig Hall, who plays Dr Jack Duncan.
“It was a measuring stick for how either far we've come, or how little we've travelled."
The show also tackled issues such as intolerance and bigotry, through David Berry’s character, James Bligh – scoring the actor a Logie nomination for his performance.
"I could see it was about issues that are often taboo in families and we know we've opened people's minds – and that's powerful," Noni Hazlehurst, who plays Elizabeth Bligh, said.
Marta Dusseldorp, who plays Sarah, says she was captivated with the show after reading the script of season one.
"I still relish that first season," the 45-year-old said.
"I've never read anything like it. I felt so excited to be a part of that."
Craig said he appreciated the sense of nostalgia the story evoked.
"It represents a time when we think, 'Ah, those were the days,'" he said. "In the first two seasons, you think, 'It'd be nice to live in this world.'"
However, in the following seasons, viewers are then exposed to the destructive family secrets that begin to unravel.
"I've learnt a lot about the damage caused by secrets and by not being who you are – they are the strong themes of the show," Noni said.
The actors also reflected on how the show was dropped by Channel Seven, before being saved by Foxtel.
"We were all devastated when it ended on season two; there was unfinished business," David, 34, said.
"And now that there's a definite ending, there's a sense that we get to define it – that's empowering and exciting."
