Showbiz stars Bert and Patti Newton celebrate 43 years of marriage
Australian media personalities Bert and Patti Newton are proving that their love can survive the long-haul as they ring in 43 years of marriage.
Over four decades ago, Patti McGrath married her radio colleague Bert Newton at St Dominic’s Parish Church in Camberwell, Victoria.
To pay tribute to Bert on their anniversary, Patti uploaded a precious photo from their wedding day.
"1974 Bert and I were married today, we've had a wonderful life together. The love of my life xx," the 72-year-old wrote.
The picture shows Bert’s best man Graham Kennedy pouring the newlyweds a glass of champagne.
According to reports at the time, over ten thousand people camped out at the church to catch a glimpse of the couple on their big day.
Since tying the knot, the couple have survived both the good and the bad side-by-side.
Bert and Patti are also parents to Matthew and Lauren and grandparents to Lauren’s four kids Lola, Eva, Sam and Monty.
Previously Patti has spoken about what she believes the secret to their marriage is.
“I think we have a great relationship because we’re not always in each other’s pocket,” she told Woman's Day in 2015.
Patti also revealed that her now 79-year-old husband is happiest when he is working and she enjoys being at home with her kids and grandchildren.
“He can go off and do a little bit of work here and there, and when he comes back there are three grandchildren at home,” she said.
This year has been particularly hard for the Newtons after both Bert and Patti had ill health.
At the start of the year, Bert was in and out of hospital as he suffered from pneumonia.
In August, Patti was hospitalised after having a bad fall.
However, their support and love for each other has helped the duo overcome the hardships.
