Shock upset: Huda eliminated from MasterChef after just one week

In a twist that no one saw coming Huda al Sultan is the first contestant to be eliminated from MasterChef Australia. She’s leaving the show after just one week, following a stressful double Mystery Box cook on Sunday evening.

The first Mystery Box had vibrant ingredients including mango, lemon, squid and tamarind with contestants fighting for a spot in the next immunity challenge.

Huda was confident in her abilities and decided to go with a lemon ice cream and tarragon crumble dessert before judges Gary Mehigan and George Calombaris suggested that she might be playing things a bit too safe.

After hearing this, she decided to switch things up for a savoury chicken pie with caramelised mango.

As the judges selected the five most appealing dishes to taste out of 24 dishes, only one cook was able to win this round. Abbey Rose came out on top and the 23 remaining chefs were faced with ominous looking black boxes.

Jess was quick to observe that “someone’s going home” after the group discovered a black apron with their names on it under the lid of the black boxes.

The Prince Harry lookalike (or Tim) decided that this challenge wasn’t for him and traded in his immunity pin to avoid the surprise elimination round.

The rest of the group opened the boxes to discover what ingredients were inside the black boxes, which included black tahini, blackberries, dark chocolate, eggplant and black tomatoes.

Huda quickly put together a creamy bed of eggplant with grilled steak and a tomato and blackberry vinaigrette but was worried about how the steak would cook.

"Cooking the steak is a new thing to me, I'm a bit nervous about it,” she said, but took the risk anyway.

However, as the steak cooked faster than expected, it hit the medium-rare point that Huda was aiming for and this was her undoing.

The judges were quick to pick up on the overcooked steak and she became the first contestant from the eleventh season to be sent home.

She left her fellow contestants with some wonderful advice, saying “life without challenges is boring” and to always “choose courage over comfort”.
