Anthony Mundine sparks controversy with "sexist" comments

He’s admitted to having “traditional” views on gender roles, and now controversial boxer Anthony Mundine has revealed that he believes women shouldn’t wear skirts above the knee.

Speaking to Real Housewives of Melbourne star Jackie Gillies on last night’s episode of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, the 42-year-old said he believed it was necessary to stop “other men lusting over your women”.

“You want to protect your women,” Anthony told Jackie.

“You don’t want other men having prerogative thoughts about your girl or your daughter.”

Jackie, who appeared dumbfounded by his remarks, questioned why he believed women shouldn’t be able to express themselves through fashion.

“Men see some t**ties and some a**e... then they're going to lust over that. They're going to look at that,” Anthony said.

Jackie then asked whether his wife would be allowed to wear a nice pair of heels and a dress.

Anthony replied that the dress would be OK, but the skirt would have to be at least knee length.

“She can wear a dress … not a short skirt, not above the knees. That is just the way I am, it is the way I feel, the way I think,” he said.

When asked by Jackie if he has the right to tell “somebody what to do”, Anthony responded: “For their own good.”

He added: “Everything in society that the creator has made unlawful, the west are making it lawful. It doesn’t matter if we were born naked. There’s garments. That was back in that time. You don’t understand because you are not built like me, you wouldn’t understand a man’s point of view. You can’t understand.”

Later in the show, Anthony told producers: “I’m not sure if I got through to her [Jackie Gillies]. I just had to let her know where I was coming from.”

Jackie also confessed to producers: “Look, Anthony Mundine and I have, I think, quite a funny relationship. It's quite love/hate.

“I like to challenge him on his beliefs but I would also like to understand where he's coming from.”

Some viewers were less than impressed by Mundine’s comments and took to social media to brand him as “sexist”.
