6 best TV shows to watch on Netflix

Gone are the days when we had just a few channels – or a bunch of half-taped-over VHS – to choose from. Now, we’ve got more networks than ever and an almost unbearable amount of TV shows, movies and documentaries to pick online. And that means we’re all asking ourselves the same thing – what should I watch?

Netflix has a number of great exclusive programs, but if you ask us, these six have to be the best. Happy watching!

1. House of Cards

With a stellar cast, talented writers and brilliant editing, House of Cards is about as close as you can get to the perfect TV show. Starring Kevin Spacey as the cold, calculating US congressman Frank Underwood, who along with his wife Claire, will stop at nothing to become the most powerful man in the world – the President of the United States. If you’re not already onto it, they’ve just released season five – so you’ve got a lot to catch up on.

2. Stranger Things

If you love all things 1980s, this is the show for you. Stranger Things was a smash hit when it premiered last year, and fans are eagerly awaiting season two later this year. Inspired by Steven Spielberg’s iconic films and filled with countless homages to 1980s pop culture, this show focuses on the disappearance of a young boy and the odd happenings around the town, including the sudden appearance of a psychokinetic girl, who helps the boy’s friends try to track him down, plus a number of unexplainable, bizarre events that block their path.

3. Grace and Frankie

It’s no secret that we’re huge fans of Grace and Frankie here at Over60. Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda star as two 70-somethings who find themselves unlikely friends after their husbands reveal they’re in love with other people – each other, to be exact. Throughout the series’ three seasons, we’ve followed the dynamic duo (who are in fact lifelong friends off-screen) as they navigate their way through the difficulties that come with relationship breakdowns, dating and ageing – in the most hilarious way.

4. Bloodline

If you’d rather thrills than laughs, look no further than Bloodline. Although it’s sadly just released its third and final season, this drama starring Kyle Chandler, Ben Mendelsohn and Linda Cardellini has garnered critical acclaim and more than a few award nominations. Set in the Florida Keys, Bloodline follows the Rayburns, a family whose tight-knit relationship comes under threat after a crime takes place and dark secrets begin to emerge.

5. Orange is the New Black

Along with House of Cards, Orange is the New Black would have to be one of the online streaming service’s biggest hits. Having just released its fifth season (and already renewed for a sixth and seventh), there’s so much that happens throughout the course of this prison-based comedy-drama (which is based on a true story) you won’t be able to tear your eyes away for a second. It follows the story of 30-something-year-old Piper Chapman who is sentenced to 15 months in prison for a 10-year-old crime. Soon, however, the focus shifts onto the many colourful characters serving time at Litchfield women’s prison.

6. Black Mirror

Ever wonder if maybe we’re starting to take technology too far? You’ll want to watch Black Mirror. A sort of Twilight Zone for the modern age, anthology series Black Mirror presents cautionary tales of what could happen if we let our technological advancements get the better of us – and the outlook is grim. Surreal, terrifying and occasionally beautiful, each episode takes place in a different iteration of reality where our reliance on electronics threatens our very lives.
