Old iPhone and iPad owners urged to update

Apple has warned users of older iPhone and iPad devices to update within this week to avoid losing key features.

The tech company said due to a GPS-related time bug that started in April, some older devices will require an iOS update by November 3 to ensure that core features continue functioning properly.

The updated versions of the operating system have been equipped with bug-fix to solve the GPS time rollover issue, which affects the way the services track time and date.

iPhone 5 owners are being urged to update to iOS 10.3.4 to maintain an accurate GPS location, which the device relies on to support features such as App Store, iCloud, email and web browsing.

Other devices affected by the bug will also require a software iOS update to keep their GPS functionality. iPad 4th generation will need to be updated to iOS 10.3.4, while iPhone 4s, iPad mini (1st generation), iPad 2 and iPad 3rd generation will need to be updated to iOS 9.3.6.

Users can update their iPhone and iPad using a Wi-Fi network or a computer.
