Tech tip: How to record your phone screen

Lisa Du is director of ReadyTechGo, a service that helps people gain the confidence and skills to embrace modern technology.

The other night, my mum needed some quick tech help from me regarding her iPhone. I explained the steps to her over the phone, but it was all getting a little confusing. So I found a different solution.

In iOs 11, you can create a screen recording and capture sound on your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. This meant I quickly created a "video" demonstrating the steps to my mum, and I sent her this short video for her to watch.

How to enable screen recording

1. Tap Settings.
2. Tap Control Centre.
3. Tap Customise Controls - A list of controls will appear.
4. Tap + next to Screen Recording.

As seen in the screen shot on the left, a little record button is now available in the Control Centre of your device.

To access the Control Centre, swipe up from the bottom of your screen.

How to use screen recording

1. Swipe up from the bottom of your screen to access the Control Centre.

2. Tap on the screen recording icon, You have 3 seconds before the recording commences.

3. As soon as recording commences, your movements will be recorded.

4. Tap on the red bar (across the top of the screen) to stop recording, and tap Stop.

5. The recording will be saved to your Photos app as a video.

This feature is so handy when you are trying to explain functions to somebody else.

Or send this tip onto your kids and grandkids, so they can capture the screen when they are trying to explain something to you!
