In 1969, at the height of their popularity, The Beatles shot the album cover for their 11th studio album. The concept was simple – the fab four crossing Abbey Road. Little did they know, this image would not only become the most iconic image associated with the band, but one of the most iconic in history.
Since the album’s release almost 50 years ago, thousands of Beatles fans from around the world have made the pilgrimage to the zebra crossing, following in the footsteps of their idols and trying to recreate that iconic photograph – much to the chagrin of London drivers.
It’s become such a tourism hotspot that Abbey Road Studios have set up a web cam, monitoring the crossing (which is now Grade II listed, meaning it can’t be altered, moved or demolished without permission from the UK government) for all to see.
