Bert and Patti Newton's son makes rare public appearance

Matthew Newton has made a rare public appearance, with the son of Australian television royalty Bert and Patti Newton interviewed by a US movie site Deadline.

After a brief stint in rehab, Newton is reportedly back in the entertainment game and being praised for his portrayal of strong female characters in Who We Are Now.

“I really enjoy telling female stories,” Newton said.

“I love writing for women. I love working with two fabulous, intelligent, wonderful actors.”

The Australian writer and director said there was a shortage of roles available for female actors in Hollywood and argued that more must be done.

“I think there is a dearth — I’m a male writer-director, but we have a 95 per cent female crew,” he said.

“I tried to write great roles for women in this movie, and I do think that it’s a really important thing to do. It’s a long time coming. I’m going to want to surround myself with as many strong, intelligent women as I can.”

Newton, who was involved in multiple assault allegations against well-known ex-girlfriends Brooke Satchwell and Rachel Taylor, is reportedly five years sober.
