What we know about the new Lord of the Rings series
More Lord of the Rings is coming to your screen – after the success of the trilogy and its Hobbit prequels, Amazon is set to adapt the story into a high-budget TV series.
Set in Middle-earth, the upcoming The Lord of the Rings TV series will explore new storylines preceding J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. Writers JD Payne and Patrick McKay are set to develop the series along with Game of Thrones alumna Bryan Cogman.

Australian actress Markella Kavenagh has been revealed as the first cast member on the show. Kavenagh, who won the Rising Stars Award at the 2018 Casting Guild of Australia Awards for her performance on BBC drama The Cry, will be playing a character named Tyra on the Amazon adaptation.
The streaming service reportedly acquired global TV rights to The Lord of the Rings, based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendary novels, in a deal that was reported to be worth nearly US$250 million in 2017.
“We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings,” said Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins at the time.
“[The team] at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.”
More news is expected to come as the series develops.
The Lord of the Rings series is expected to launch on Amazon Prime Video in 2021.
