Prince’s ex-wife reveals the tragedy that broke his heart

In a new book, The Most Beautiful: My Life With Prince, Prince’s ex-wife Mayte Garcia opens up about the couple’s son who died six days after his birth in 1996.

When Mayte discovered she was pregnant at 22 she was overjoyed for her near future of raising a family with Prince.

She had a smooth pregnancy until she started bleeding and the doctor recommended conducting a test to see if there were any genetic abnormalities.

The test carried a risk of miscarriage so Prince decided they would not do it.

“My husband said, ‘No, we’re not doing that,” Mayte said.

Their son was born on the October 16, 1996 with rare genetic disorder Pfeiffer syndrome type 2, which causes skeletal abnormalities.

Their baby Amirr, which means Prince in Arabic, struggled to breath and underwent multiple surgeries before his death.

In her memoir Mayte writes, “I don’t know how to describe the look on my husband’s face. Pure joy,” she said on Prince meeting his son for the first time. “And then they held the baby up to those harsh lights. The elation on my husband’s face turned to pure terror.”

“I don’t think he ever got over it,” she told People magazine. “I don’t know how anybody can get over it. I know I haven’t.”
