The awkward moment between Sylvia Jeffreys and Michael Bolton

When you’ve been in the entertainment industry for as long as pop icon Michael Bolton, you’re bound to have an odd interview experience or two. That said, when the 64-year-old pop icon sat down for his exclusive Today show interview with Sylvia Jeffreys, we bet he wasn’t expecting it to be half as awkward as it turned out to be.

The interview started in a relatively standard way, before the 31-year-old television presenter handed Bolton a copy of her husband Peter Stefanovic’s book.

It might have been an innocent (if awkward) plug, but it wasn’t well-received at all.

“That's just Aussie hospitality, you know!” she said, seguing into: “speaking of which, I have a gift for you on behalf of my husband (Peter Stefanovic).”

Jeffreys handed Bolton a copy of Hack in a Flak Jacket: Wars, riots and revolutions - dispatches from a foreign correspondent, and the singer was clearly surprised.

“Wow” he replied.

“He wrote a book and wanted you to have it, given your love of the written word,” Sylvia continued.

“But if you will tell me you will read it, I probably won't believe you.”

Bolton played along to his credit, opening the book somewhere in the middle saying, “Hold on a second, I've done this new speed reading thing.”

He looked at the page then closed it saying, “Oh that's amazing, that's fantastic.”

“Done?” Sylvia replied, “What was the best part?”

“The part where he escapes alive,” Michael replied.

“There is actually a part like that, so there you go!” the Today presenter added.

“See, I'm psychic too!” the singer joked, with an eye roll.

Michael Bolton is in Australia to promote a new advertisement for audio book company Audible, where he parodies his 1993 smash hit Said I Loved You… But I Lied.

What do you think? Did you see the interview? Did you think it was unnecessarily awkward? Or just a bit of light-hearted fun?
