Reasons to join a book club

If you are looking for a way to meet some new people in a casual environment, why not consider joining (or starting) a book club? Today we have four good reasons why you should look into it.

1. Meet some new people with similar interests

Ideally you want to branch out and so it’s a good idea to join a book club where you don’t already know everyone. Widening your social circle is a positive way to meet interesting people who have similar interests to you. Some book clubs are specialised (for instance they may focus on murder-mysteries, or choose from the New York Times Best Sellers list). This means you are more likely to meet people that you will click with, and we can all do with some new friends.

2. You’ll read books you may not have considered reading

Being involved with these new people means that you are open to new experiences. So if you are happy to step out of your comfort zone you might also find that you enjoy some books that perhaps you wouldn’t ever have picked up on your own. And that’s always a positive.

3. It’s fun to discuss the meaning behind a book

So often reading is a private pursuit, so it’s nice to spend some time discussing the finer details within the book club. You might have some questions of your own (‘do you think she knew that he was back in town but didn’t say anything?’) or you might find yourself drawn into a discussion about hidden meanings and symbolism that you hadn’t even thought of before. Either way it’s fun to expand your mind and see things from other people’s points of view.

4. You can drink nice wine

More often than not a book club will be held at night and you might all chip in to provide some wine and snacks (hello cheese platter). You could take turns hosting the book club at your home and the host could provide the food and wine. This way you’ll get to not only have a nosy about at other people’s houses (which, let’s face it, is endlessly fascinating) but you’ll also get to sample some new dishes (and ask for the recipe).
