Ita Buttrose criticises "fake" magazine stories

Ita Buttrose has criticised the state of the Australian magazine industry and argued that they have nobody to blame for falling circulation but themselves.

The Studio 10 host, who was the founding editor of Cosmopolitan magazine in 1971 and had a legendary stint at the helm of The Australian Women’s Weekly argues the print world has let down readers with conflicting stories about celebs.

"They let down the standard of women's media," she told Saturday Extra. "They assume the readers are morons and then blame everyone else for falling circulation.

"I'm sorry to see the truth used so carelessly.

"The number one rule in journalism is to get the facts correct. If you can’t check facts and verify they’re correct, you don’t publish."

Buttrose ultimately said the mags are, "letting readers down".

"I hate to bag the magazines because I love them so much. But I would like to see them lift their standards and start printing the truth again.

"They might find the public would love them for it."

What are your thoughts? Do you think there’s been a decline in the quality of magazines?
