10 photos that show the power of reading

“Reading makes immigrants of us all,” writer Jean Rhys once said. “It takes us away from home, but more important, it finds homes for us everywhere.” Given the photos you’re about to see, this statement couldn’t be truer.

Last year, Steve McCurry, the man behind the iconic National Geographic cover photo “Afghan Girl”, published a collection of photos from almost 40 years of his photojournalism career, all celebrating one of life’s simplest joys – reading. Titled Steve McCurry: On Reading, he captures that exquisite sense of escapism we all feel when we’re absorbed into a truly great book.
