Beautiful photo series reveals the loneliness of insomnia

If you’ve ever experienced insomnia before, you’ll know just how lonely it can be, especially when it seems the rest of the world is sleeping happily while you endure a constant struggle. Now, 39-year-old photographer Michael Massaia from New Jersey has captured how lonely insomnia really is, with a haunting series of photos depicting an eerily empty Central Park.

“It was a bit maddening trying to fill up all the hours,” Massaia, who has suffered insomnia since the age of 13, told the Huffington Post. “My desire to sleep wasn't to try and get rest, it was to simply help pass the time.”

That’s what led the photographer to start a little night-time project, as a way of capturing the contrast between the dark, empty night and the bustling, bright daytime. “I hope people take away from the project a kind of compelling isolation, or perhaps something as simple as being able to turn a defect into something useful.”

Take a look at the fascinating photos above and tell us in the comments below, have you ever experienced insomnia? How did you overcome it?
