The trailer for the much anticipated film I, Tonya has just been released and there’s already Oscar buzz for Australian actress Margot Robbie’s performance of disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding.
The new 50-second clip unveils the first look at 27-year-old Robbie masterfully whizzing around the ice.
“America, they want someone to love,” the Australian star narrates in a very impressive Oregon accent. “But they want someone to hate.”
The film tells the tale behind the shocking 1994 attack on figure skater Nancy Kerrigan.
Tonya, now 46, was infamously accused of ordering the attack and received a lifetime ban from the U.S. Figure Skating Association.
Tonya’s bodyguard and ex-husband was enlisted to break Nancy’s legs and although he bungled the job, Nancy was force out of the U.S. Figure Skating Championship.
The next month, both Tonya and Nancy competed in the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer. Tonya came eight, whereas Nancy earned a silver medal.
Tonya pleaded guilty to conspiracy to hinder their prosecution, managing to keep herself out of prison.
I, Tonya hits theatres on December 8.
